What was the project OES worked on?

OES were asked to create two extensions for an existing masonry pavilion building so that the community could enjoy an even richer visitor experience from Dudley’s richly historic and locally loved Priory Park.

The specific aims of the project were to conserve and enhance the landscape whilst meeting visitors’ needs and wants. And we were delighted to be part of this development.

An important £500,000 community development scheme, our work provided Priory Park with more, much-needed space for it to showcase local history, to give parkgoers somewhere to meet, and to provide WC facilities for the park.

The extensions we provided now serve the public as a community centre. Sympathetic to the park’s ecosystem and aesthetic, and certainly destined to become a part of the Priory Park’s history, this fantastic project ended up producing the remarkable development the client had always had in mind.

Structural engineering

What we did at the project

At OES, we customise our structural engineering design service to each development. We always use the most appropriate and cost effective materials for each build.

After assessing the existing building structure, we decided to create a single storey frame building. We then stabilised the structure using a combination of rigid frames and cross bracing.

We conducted our soil investigations diligently to ensure we chose the best substructure design. In such a historic, green parkland, it was crucial that the building foundations were done right. We designed a mass concrete strip and pad foundation for the extensions to guarantee sustainability.

What the most challenging aspect of the job was

Linking the new and existing structures together was a demanding task. We aimed to make the extensions join seamlessly to the building, and we succeeded; the appearance of the pavilion is completely consistent and in keeping with the style of the park.

The project proved challenging as we needed to provide lateral stability to the structures. Due to the unusual geometry of the building and the glazed elevations involved, the task was not an easy one.

But our innovative-driven colleagues who worked on the Priory Park scheme had a vast range of experience, which enabled them to clear every hurdle, completing the project without complication.

After the work

Director and co-founder of OES, Sundeep Batt expresses his pride in his team.

“This project couldn’t have gone better. It was a pleasure to work on developing such a historically prominent place.

“I am extremely passionate about increasing the speed of production for clients and making the most out of the materials used. I consider the Priory Park extension a great success in both aspects.”
